A - WINNER DANIEL SMITH
club member Daniel Smith survived numerous
attacks to finish SJBC's Vuelta de San Jose
with the lowest time in the A group. Daryl
Spano finished second, Bill Keegan third,
with Chris Weiler and Phil Lovaglio rounding
out the top 5.
After the TT, Smith had 35 second lead finishing
in 17:07 to second place Lovaglio's time of
17:42. Fillerup and Studenicka also broke
18, with the majority of the A's in the low
18's. Since Smith races for another team,
the Team San Jose Squadra made plans to attack.
The criterium started with a moderate pace.
Spano jumped early for the half way bonus,
but was brought back and was countered beautifully
by Lico who took the 10 bonus seconds. A few
laps later Studenicka and Keegan attacked
to build a lead of almost 30 seconds. With
bonus seconds for first, second and third,
Studenicka was the virtual leader on the road.
Forced to chase, Smith brought the break back
with two laps remaining. Counterattacks by
Lovaglio and then Lico were neutralized, but
a final attack by Wieler broke away for the
win with Smith leading the pack for second
and Studenicka third.
Smith's lead was looking fragile at the start
of the 48 mile Tour of the Lakes. Morrison
and Keegan attacked on the first lap and opened
a lead of over a minute to become leaders
on the road. Once again Smith was forced to
chase and brought the leaders back with half
a lap remaining. Spano quickly countered and
built a lead to become virtual leader. Keegan
attacked to bridge to Spano, and finally Smith
launched himself away from the peloton to
limit time losses. Spano stayed away for the
stage victory and second overall, but Smith
closed within 10 seconds to maintain first
overall with Keegan gaining enough time for
Overall it was a great event. Thanks to Gary
and Benson for their hard work. Results are

If you enjoyed the Vuelta and want to get
more involved with club, there are plenty
of opportunities. At this time the club really
needs a sponsorship coordinator and pro-am
coordinators, but we can always use help with
newsletter content/production and winter series
volunteers. Let us know if you can help out.
See you at the winter series.
